STRATIS DELIYIANNAKIS OR BIKOSTRATIS
Stratis Deliyiannakis or Bikostratis (179?-1866): From Asfendou in Sphakia. During the Revolution he was active throughout Crete. He participated in the capture of Arkadi Monastery in January 1822 and the battle of Frangokastello in May 1828. In 1829 he was awarded the rank of chiliarch (commander of 1,000 men). He later settled on the island of Melos, where he died.
The Orthodox Christian Cretans took part in the Greek Revolution, but the island was not integrated into the Greek state established in 1830. Crete remained a possession of the Ottoman Empire, with repeated uprisings by the Greek inhabitants, until 1898, when it gained its autonomy (Cretan State), before eventually being incorporated into the Kingdom of Greece in 1913.
